World's Worst 100 Websites
A cruise around the lowlights, lowlifes and utterpointlessnesses of the internet... with added popular-things-which-are-not-very-good.

Moon hoax
This is a site to deal with the alleged hoax that was the NASA moonlanding. Bizarrely, there's no link to the site from its own homepage. But here is the link.

For people with fluffy head
Maybe you're the sort of person abusing the office computer to find the best pictures of kittens you can stare at, wasting your day and your employer's money!
NoBrain!
Dobhran.com - a site full of all the things which people send to each other.
That doesn't make them any good!
Sheet Music
An archive of sheet music that's free, but has limited access, bad reproduction, copyright breach and not especially good design.
Sheet Music Archive.
What do we want?
Making a petition? Then maybe go to Petition Spot where nearly 10,000 people want to get a Michael Jackson DVD and only 30 want exploitative child slave-labour reduced.
I remember it being better
The Onion used to be an amusing and vaguely satiric spoof newspapre. Now, it's fairly dull.
Another sense of pointlessness - emulating a home computer
It's an impressive tour-de-force, being able to use an old Spectrum computer within a web browser to play the old fashioned games... but is there any point? No. No, there isn't!
Spectrum emulator at twinbee.org.
What the hell is this?
A site offering "clips"? Clips of what? Clippings? It's hard to say. It appears to have only 45 items of content, and I couldn't find anything even remotely useful.
BestClips.com.
Me dot com
Once upon a time, a man named Chris set up a website dedicated to himself - see Chris.com. Mainly, this site contains ascii art, which is also no good!
The Princess Diana Conspiracy
There's bound to be somewhere on the net for the wackos to muse about the events surrounding Princess Diana's death. Here is that place.

A tip off
I'm not the only person to attempt a compendium of internet inadequacy. Here is someone else's:
www.webpagesthatsuck.com
I'll check them out to get some tips.

A half-blood prince among sites
The Floo network has a bunch of good Harry Potter fan sites. This one looks to be the least well-endowed.
What an oddness
This is a site devoted to abusing the site name extensions. Very odd - Domain Brain.
Not exactly intelligent debate
Moorewatch - just a begging bowl, littered with adverts. Very unimpressive.
No more qwests
The Bin - the home of the Qwizard qwests... the biggest and yet most addictive waste of time to hit the internet. Please. No more.

The rating system
In order to work out what makes a bad site, we should define what makes a good site. I've looked at Tim Berners Lee's original article for some guidance.
- Useful information
- Easy to use
- Open access
- Good use of design
- Effort has been profitably invested
- Beneficial to use
Bad site points
Rated from 0 to 10. 0 is good, 10 is terrible.
- Uselessness
- Restriction of access
- Bad design
- Unprofitability (of effort put into the site)
- Timewaster factor
- Smugness
To order the sites, we need some measure of how bad a site is. We can do this with Euclidean distance, which is the sum of the squares of the scores. So, the perfect site, with all zeroes will score 0, and the worst possible site with 10 in each category (squared, means 100) will score 600. Simple!

First into the list
WWW Consortium. Yes, I'm going to throw the web back into Tim Berners Lee's face. Well, sort of. The W3C site may well be full of useful standards and discussion, but it's hardly a barrel of laughs. Plus, it's quite hard to find the most important stuff about the Web - i.e. it's raison d'etre... and when you look at TBL's home page, you wonder about whether he's really just sick and tired of the world.
The reason to look up this page was to find out what the web is supposed to be about. Here are some ideas, culled from the original document on the subject:
- Information managament
- Easy to find information with rich, cross system, links
- Copyright not important, access is
- Easy to use and standardised
- Accessibility more important than fancy graphics
- Should be useful
Here we go again...
As if Around the World in 80 Websites wasn't taxing enough, I've just agreed another ludicrous challenge. The World's Worst 100 Websites. This slightly looser premise should be easier, but larger. Watch me suffer.
